The words 'root canal' is feared by many, even though the treatment itself is not all that painful or time consuming. The reason that a person might need a root canal is when the root of the tooth becomes infected and has to be removed. A root canal is actually a very valuable treatment because if the tooth cannot be treated by root canal, it will have to be removed and replaced with an implant. It is always more advisable and more efficient to keep a natural tooth rather than having a replacement put in. This is also why we try to save as much of the natural tooth structure as possible, even if it may have been practically damaged.

What a root canal does, essentially, is taking out the infected root of the tooth, which leaves an empty space, or 'canal.' This space is then filled with a special material that hardens and gives strength to the remaining tooth structure.

At Portmore Dental Office, we have special equipment to do root canal treatment, which allows us to do the best filling possible in that tooth. Also, one of our dentists, Eben Van der Walt, makes root canals which is a special interest of his and has received numerous referrals for the work he does.

A root canal may be required for patients who have not kept their teeth clean enough, and where plaque and bacteria have accumulated at the root of the tooth. A root canal is a last resort treatment to save an infected tooth. Once treated, a crown is placed over the tooth in order to give it more strength and for the tooth to be able to function like other natural teeth. This allows the patient to speak and chew comfortably, without the pain they experienced earlier while the tooth was infected. Chewing properly also means that the patient can digest their food properly.

Symptoms of tooth infection which may require root canal treatment include severe pain in the tooth, persistent sensitivity to hot or cold foods and beverages, discolouration of the tooth, and swelling and tenderness in the nearby gums.

It is vital that teeth are kept clean to maintain good oral health and prevent complications. Apart from regular hygiene practices at home, patients should also visit their dentist for routine checkups in order to prevent problems before they become worse and lead to situations that may require treatments like root canals.
