Not everyone is lucky enough to be born with a perfect smile. At Portmore, we see many patients who are unhappy with the appearance of their teeth and who ask us to help them to create their dream smile.
We are able to create a brand new, gorgeous, natural smile for patients in as little as 3 weeks! However, the key to ensuring a perfect outcome is planning and assessment of the patient prior to the first appointment.
Your initial consultation will be extensive & thorough, we want to find out all about you from how you feel about your current smile to your occupation. Firstly, we will talk to you about what it is you want to achieve, and what YOU think makes a beautiful smile. After all everyone is different, some patients choose to have a very white ‘hollywood’ type smile with perfectly even straight teeth; other patients prefer a more subtle approach.
The key at this point is being very clear on your expectations and your desired result.
We will ask you about your occupation, (we’re not being nosy, honest!) as its important for us to understand what kind of life you lead in relation to how you will maintain your smile. For example, we probably wouldn’t place fixed braces on a singer, trumpet player, keen diver or amateur boxer, as it may be too intrusive.
When we assess patients for a new smile, we also examine their facial form & features, including skin colour, profile and smile/gum lines, we may take clinical photographs for planning purposes and often we send these photos to the lab technicians who make the final teeth just so they have a clear picture of ‘the person’ at the other end.
New smiles are not created with a ‘one size fits all’ approach, the technicians can spend up to 20 hours fine tuning shape and colour of porcelain veneers, it is the very smallest, most subtle differences in colour shading and layering that can make your smile completely authentic and truly unique.
Of course, Smile Design is not just about appearance and aesthetics. It is vital that functionality stands the test of time, we would hope that with correct maintenance your new smile will last 10-15 yrs+. To assess function, we construct plaster models of your teeth so that we can carefully examine your occlusion (‘bite’), which means that we study how your teeth bite together and move/meet across each other – this is especially important for patients who suffer from extreme ‘wear’.
Finally, the patient will be fitted with the most beautiful new smile resulting in what can be for some people, very life changing experiences (new jobs, new relationships, new found confidence).
