At Portmore, we see and treat many patients who suffer from fear, anxiety or have some form of dental phobia.

Often, these patients live in pain or discomfort and suffer from social embarrassment and low self-esteem because of a less than perfect smile. Dental anxiety can even affect people economically, if they feel too uncomfortable with their appearance to go to work. We can offer you conscious sedation if you suffer from extreme dental anxiety or you feel you could benefit from being calmer for your first few appointments.

What is conscious sedation and how does it work?

The aim of sedation is to make you comfortable, totally relaxed and safe during a procedure. Administration of the sedatives and analgesia results in you becoming drowsy and sleepy, pain free, and probably amnesic such that you will have very little recollection of the procedure.
Communication is possible if necessary during the treatment because even though you are completely relaxed and unconcerned, you are not completely unconscious at any point in time. Your vital signs e.g. blood pressure, breathing and pulse rate will be monitored throughout the procedure to ensure your safety, and a sedationist will stay with you during your entire visit.
Recovery after conscious sedation is much faster than with general anaesthesia, in fact very few patients experience any side effects at all. For these reasons patient satisfaction is very high after conscious sedation – a recent survey of the experiences and satisfaction of patients who had sedation show that 99.5% of patients would take sedation again if they have a choice.
For these reasons, dental sedation is extremely safe. Patients often fall asleep during the treatment and lose track of time, so the appointment may only seem like a few minutes.
The versatility and safety of conscious sedation coupled with the many benefits to the patient make conscious sedation the perfect choice for dental procedures.

Goals of conscious sedation:

  • Improve your safety and comfort
  • Remove your discomfort and anxiety
  • Ensures success of the procedure
  • Minimal recovery periods
  • Cost effective treatment

Benefits of sedation

  • Comfortable, practical, co-operative and convenient for you and your dentist
  • Very safe (due to lower levels of medication administered) and highly effective
  • Time saving due to your quick recovery and no need for hospital admission
  • Economical since no hospital stay, less side effects, and minimal time off work

If you or a loved one are putting off dental treatment or a visit to the dentist, or are living with pain and discomfort due to fear and anxiety, PLEASE do give us a call today and talk to us about Dental Sedation. Patients are welcome to come into the practice to meet one of our Treatment Coordinators in a non-clinical environment to discuss their anxiety and fear.
