Most people who snore suffer from sleep apnoea.
What is it?
Sleep apnoea is a common sleep disorder characterised by brief interruptions of breathing during sleep. These episodes, called apnoeas last 10 seconds or more and occur repeatedly throughout the night. People with sleep apnoea awaken partially during the night as they struggle to breathe, but in the morning they may well not be aware at all they were disturbed in their sleep. Various degrees of sleep apnoea may also be associated with snoring.
Symptoms of sleep apnoea include excessive daytime sleepiness, restless sleep, loud snoring, falling asleep during the day, morning head aches, trouble concentrating, irritability, forgetfulness, mood or behaviour changes, weight gain, increase heart rate, anxiety and depression
Treatment
Most treatment regimes begin with lifestyle change, i.e. avoid alcohol, weight loss and quitting smoking. Some people with light or medium sleep apnea are helped with an oral appliance designed to keep their airway open during sleep.
We recommend our patients use the SILENSOR, this is an oral appliance which is worn over the teeth at night (very similar to a gum shield) which widens the respiratory tract by moving forward the lower jaw. It consists of two transparent splints, one each for the upper and lower jaw. Because of its compact design the device does not inhibit breathing through the mouth. Clinical test have shown that the moving forward of the lower jaw reduces snoring at 90% and may reduce the apnea index up to 50%
Each SILENSOR device is custom made for each patient.
