So there is so much hype and information in the media at the moment about health, diet, lifestyle –things we should and shouldn’t eat, what type of exercise is best, how much fluid we should drink blah blah….

Working with 10+ girls I find it is the main topic of conversation during most days. There isn’t a new food fad that we haven’t tried (smoothies, avocado’s on rye bread, Paleo, fasting, eggs, porridge, gallons of water, restricting caffeine, restricting chocolate, restricting EVERYTHING!). There isn’t an exercise regime that we haven’t tormented ourselves with (bootcamp, running, cycling, HIIT training, spin class walking miles and miles and miles….)

How is anyone expected to make ANY sense of it all? Let alone DO any of it?

So, I got to thinking…I’m going back to basics and will aim to follow a simple plan that can fit into my hectic lifestyle – a plan that doesn’t cost the earth, a plan that doesn’t require me to spend hours in the kitchen with chia seeds and organic this and that, a plan that doesn’t make me feel guilty if I don’t run every day of the week.

So here goes, am sharing this with you….

  • 2-3 litres of water a day (depending on how much exercise I do). That’s 2 litres of fresh tap water, in addition to any other fluid I may have during the day. Note ‘tap-water’ – does not need to be fancy pants ‘£3 a bottle’ type water……
  • No meat, masses of fish (long story and my personal choice)
  • No processed food. Nothing out of a packet wherever possible. This doesn’t mean lots of cooking, it means simple salads, steamed/baked veg, and soups blitzed in the blender, eggs, yogurt. You get the idea.
  • 5+ portions of fruit/veggies a day
  • 45 mins of exercise a day – dog walking and walking into town at lunchtime also counts. But it has to be 45 mins.
  • 1 cup of coffee a day -I can’t and don’t want to give it up – so 1 shall be my daily treat.
  • No alcohol on a school night –it makes my head fuzzy & disrupts my sleep.

Easy to follow – Just fill my water bottle every morning and make sure I drink it. Shop on-line and get it delivered to make sure I make the right food choices and always have a fridge filled with ‘healthy stuff’. Don’t feel guilty about lack of intense exercise, instead enjoy walking the dogs more. Sleep better – no coffee/no alcohol.

Simples.

Although I will follow the 80/20 rule – life isn’t that prescriptive is it? There will always be nights out with friends, birthday cake at work, date nights and holidays. And that’s OK, food is a pleasure to be enjoyed after all, just not overindulged in.

Anyway, excuse me whilst I peel my orange and sip my ginger tea – I’ll let you know how I’m getting on next month….
